MASSEREENE BRIDGE 547
This is Massereene Bridge taken in the early 1900's from
a postcard. It just shows the awe and power photographers had back then when
could order crowds of people to stand or sit on the bridge while he took this
photograph.
MASSEREENE BRASS AND REED BAND
1111
These are the members of the Massereene Brass and Reed
Band outside Clotworthy House in Antrim Castle grounds on a Saturday afternoon
in 1921.
The only one known is James Carson with his Baritone who is in the front row
far right.
MASSEREENE GOLF CLUB 48
Members of the club with seated in the centre Viscount
Massereene in 1904.
MASSEREENE BRASS AND REED BAND 2308
Here we are in Fountain Street in 1918, in the middle
of this crowd is the Massereene Brass and Reed band playing their hearts out,
but as you can see not one of bandsmen are in uniform. They are in their working
clothes, having rushed out of work grabbed their musical instruments and all
met up in Market Square. The reason for this is that it's the 11th November
1918 and Peace has been declared in Europe the Great War is over at last.
A thanks-giving service had been held in Market Square and they had provided
the music. All the shops and schools closed and all the towns-people came
out and joined in, what a joyous day it was. After the service the Massereene
Brass and Reed band played all the way up to the top of the town and them
back down again. As you can see by the photograph hundreds of people followed
them while the children skipped along to the music. The first shop on the
right is Jennings, then we have Baird's Wine & Spirits Store, Burrowes
Antique Gallery and partly hidden in the Unitarian Church. Now although this
was a joyous day for many it was a sad day for those whose loved ones would
not be coming home, perhaps that is the reason the little boy in the centre
with bare feet and looking sad has no father coming home.
MASSEREENE FORGE 152
All shod and ready to go home is this horse and cart.
The boy standing to the right in the doorway was Jimmy Baird.
Take a look at the pavement it is still cobbled, I bet that wasn't easy to
walk on in the winter. Date is Unknown.
MASSEREENE GOLF CLUB
180
Here is something of a rarity - the grand opening of
Massereene Golf Club back in 1904. The great and the good congregated at the
'modern' new club-clubhouse for the lavish event - as by the dresses and bonnets
worn by the ladies. Guest of honour was Viscount Massereene, himself a keen
player.
MASSEREENE FORGE 83
It is 1920 and standing in the middle outside Massereene
Forge in which they worked are blacksmiths Jim Coulter and his Father. The
other men are all unknown.
MASSEREENE FORGE 149
The man standing next to the horse is Jimmy Coulter and
the reason he is standing there is his dad would not pose for the camera and
you can just make him out hiding inside. The little girl's name then was Caroline
Kissick now Mrs Stewart who has gone home, the boy next to her is called Harrison,
the other boy's name is unknown as back then he was from Riverside and the
Massereene & Riverside kids didn't play together ! The photograph was
taken in 1935.
MASSEREENE FORGE
267
Built in 1887 under instructions from Viscount Massereene,
who when coming along one day on his horse he saw his blacksmith working away
in the rain with no shelter to protect him or the horses. He was probably
thinking about the horses, the Blacksmith in the picture is Mr. Coulter.
Some people have etched their initials on the walls, do you know any of them?
N.C.1933; W.J. 1934; J.M.B.; S.D; S.G; J.C; The J.M.B.
initials belong to John Martin Buick 1950.
MASSEREENE FORGE
906
This is is not the usual photograph that would be taken
of the blacksmith's forge but as it was a Sunday in 1938 it was closed.

MASSEREENE BRIDGE 15
This photograph was taken in the late 1950's.
MASSEREENE BRIDGE 82
Taken on the banks of the Sixmilewater River this shows
Massereene Bridge and the concrete walkway which used to run right down to
Hall's Hotel.
The photograph was taken in 1947 and used as a postcard but as you can see
very little of the building you can see have changed.
On the back of the postcard which was postmarked Antrim 24th August 1948 was
the following:
To Mr &Mrs.
W. Eclclo, 76 Berry Lane, Longbridge, Preston, Lancashire.
Reads: Monday, a day entirely free from rain, a long drive to Mountains of
Mourne and visit to the Free State. Cocoanut was in demand by all and all
and sundry, but little or none was obtainable,
I did not get any. Tomorrow hope to go to Derry but it is further than at
first thought. PS.
MASSEREENE BRIDGE 19
Massereene bridge was built by Lord Massereene and John
O'Neill Esquire in 1708 as a gift to the people of Antrim.
The bridge was repaired and widened in 1857 by William Vance who was Chairman
of the town Commissioners and owned a hardware shop in High Street. The small
railway track that you can see on the bank of the river was used to deliver
goods to Hall's Hotel.
There used to be a slipway at the side of High Street Presbyterian Church.
The delivery men would load the goods on to the trucks which were then pushed
along to Hall's back entrance. Date is unknown.
MASSEREENE BRIDGE 713
This is Massereene Bridge in Bridge Street spanning the
Sixmilewater river and the two boys are posing for the photographer.
In the background is All Saints' Parish Church, the year is unknown.
MASSEREENE BRIDGE 571
This unusual shot of Massereene Bridge was taken from
the tower of all Saints' Parish Church in 1952 - and the skyline has certainly
changed over the last 50 years. The long building to the right was the Massereene
Hotel, which was demolished while on the left you can clearly make out Massereene
National School. It was taken over by the British Legion Also demolished are
the row of small town houses overlooking the Sixmilewater river.
My thanks to Ed Cunningham has

and the cost to get in? only 6d ! In todays money would be 2 1/2p. The leaflet
was printed by Millar of Castle Street.
Dated September 1905.
MASSEREENE BRIDGE 3515
It's 3.25pm and the photographer takes this
wonderful photograph on a long exposure of the Massereene Bridge. You can
see a man with a bowler hat on fishing as the
Sixmilewater river slowly meanders it's way under the bridge to Lough Neagh.
The year of the photograph in not known

PADDY MARKS 1655
The year is 1977 and a street party is in full swing
on the Dublin Road and Heather Talbot is being held in the arms of Paddy Marks
who has gone home.
MUCKAMORE VILLAGE 3485
This is the second row of the Muckamore houses which
are next to the Sixmilewater river and it is June 1981.
Now the buildings you see right over the river they are out-houses where they
had primitive water flushed toilets that were still in use at that time. They
where built there for it was the most convenient modern way to get to get
rid of your waste although can you imagine having to go down there in the
middle of the night and even more so if it was the middle of the night. Or
during the day with snow on the ground and remember it would not be too warm
in there. The two rows of houses were built back to back and this left an
entry wide enough for a horse and cart. ow the front row of houses because
they had no river at the back of their gardens they had dry toilets. So at
regular intervals a man would come with the horse and cart and at the back
of dry toilets was a steel plate which the man lifted and then shoveled out
the contents and into the cart. The air in the summer would have been not
very nice, but there were no complaints from the residents who were glad enough
to have a job in York Street Mill and the tied house that went with it.
MAILEY WEDDING 3630
Singing the registar at her Wedding is Maureen Mailey
and her husband Ron Mailey and in the background are the Best man and Bridesmaid
sadly Unknown.

them!

MARKET DAY 3174
It's the 1970's and because it's a Friday it's Market
Day in Antrim for this market was not held in the market square but up the
Oriel Road.
It was a well attended market and as you can see plenty of stalls, if you
wonder where it was on the Oriel Road it was behind McCabe's Garage.
MARKET SQUARE 3490
Smythe's, Carig's shops ready for demolition and a VW
Beetle. Could this picture of Market Square in Antrim be any more 1970's?
MASSEREENE FORGE
153
This is Bridge Street and you are looking towards High
Street. The white washed houses to your right have thatched roofs and look
at the height of the doors, you would need to bend your head going into them.
Next door we have the most photographed building in Antrim town, the forge.
Which years later became a shop and known locally as the 'Horseshoe Shop'.
UMBERTO MASETTI 2965
Here Umberto masetti on his 203cc M.V. Agusta racing round the quarry bends
at Dundrod in the 1955 Ulster Grand Prix. Masetti was born in Borgo delle
Rose, in the province of Parma.
He debuted in the Grand Prix motorcycle World Championship in 1949 aboard
a Moto Morini, in the 125cc class. In the same year he also raced a Benelli
in the 250cc class and a Gilera in the 500cc class.
In 1950, Masetti won the Grands Prix of Belgium and the Netherlands and defeated
Geoff Duke for the 500cc World Championship. In 1952, still with Gilera, he
was again World Champion, again taking victories in Belgium and the Netherlands.
In 1953 he raced in the 250cc class for NSU, but an accident at Imola prevented
him from taking part for much of the season. In 1954 Masetti was again in
the 500cc class with Gilera. In 1955 he divided his time between the 250cc
and 500cc classes, this time for the MV Agusta factory, with whom he raced
for until 1958. That year, after an unsuccessful season in the 500cc class,
he retired from motorcycle competition. Masetti then lived in Maranello, where
he died in 2006.

the uniforms along with the band instruments so at the moment I cannot confirm
the colours.
